Despite practicing this week, Prince Tega Wanogho, a former offensive tackle for Auburn, will not be reinstated from injured reserve and will not play in Super Bowl LVIII.
Wanogho and guard Joe Thuney will not play in Sunday’s NFL championship game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers in 2023, the team said on Friday.
Thuney, a first-team All-Pro choice at left guard this season, suffered a pectoral injury on January 21 during Kansas City’s 27-24 victory against the Buffalo Bills in the AFC playoffs’ second round. He was not present for the Chiefs’ 17-10 AFC Championship Game victory over the Baltimore Ravens on January 28.
Wanogho practiced this week, whereas Thuney did not. After a quadriceps injury destroyed his season, he returned to practice on January 24, but Kansas City has determined he won’t be added back to the active roster.
The only player from Auburn who is still playing for the Super Bowl LVIII team is Wanogho. Wanogno’s injury will stop Auburn’s eight-year run of having a former student-athlete compete in the Super Bowl. In the Tigers’ history, this is the longest streak.
