Although it seems like a long time ago, Dan Quinn’s five and a half seasons as the Atlanta Falcons’ head coach ended just over three years ago. Following three successful seasons as the defensive coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys, Quinn is back in the same position with the Washington Commanders, riding a tide of momentum. But given that Washington recently fired Ron Rivera, another repurposed head coach, after a miserable 4-13 season, it’s understandable why some fans might be hesitant to sign Quinn. What is different with Quinn?
First of all, a new understanding of how to evenly distribute himself across the three units. “That’s one of the lessons to take on, to say man, I’ve got to make sure after doing the 360 of leaving Atlanta, of spreading myself too thin,” Quinn stated. “And so, where I need to be is right there with the offence, right there with the defence and the special teams, and not allow outside things in the organization, just more things to do.” Quinn had success in his first few years in Atlanta. He began 2019 as the defensive play-caller for the Falcons before handing over responsibilities to others. In Quinn’s first season, the Falcons finished 8-8; in his second, they lost in the Super Bowl; and in his third, they were eliminated in the NFC Divisional round.
