Several media sources announced on Friday night that veteran forward Danilo Gallinari had committed to the Milwaukee Bucks for the rest of the year. The Detroit Pistons acquired Gallinari last week.
Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN claims that a reunion with his old coach Doc Rivers was the key component. It was during Rivers’ tenure with the Los Angeles Clippers that he and Gallinari met paths.
Woj adds that the Bucks offered Gallinari a slot in their rotation, which is another reason. Playoff contenders like the Cleveland Cavaliers and Los Angeles Clippers showed interest in Gallanari, suggesting that minutes played a major role in his decision.
The 35-year-old Gallinari provides a stretch four with postseason experience.Gallinari played with the Washington Wizards for the majority of the season before being moved to the Pistons and spe nding a few weeks in Detroit. This season, Gallinari is shooting 35% from three point range and is averaging 7.3 points per game.For the players who are currently on the roster, the Cavaliers are already having difficulty finding minutes for them. It will add intrigue to the negotiations for the other buyout candidates, such as Gallinari, who may find it difficult to secure a seat in the rotation.
It also illustrates how highly the Cavaliers regard the players already on the team, their depth, and their minutes played on a regular basis. Would Gallinari be given more minutes than Georges Niang or Dean Wade? Most likely not.
After Zhaire Smith’s 10-day contract expires, the Cavaliers do have one free roster space that they can fill. Additionally, one two-way slot is available.
