With Kendall Fuller potentially leaving the Washington Commanders, the team is looking for a cornerback in free agency. Fuller, who turned 29 earlier this month, is a free agency this offseason, and The 33rd Team ranks him as the fifth-best cornerback available.
Fuller spent the first two seasons of his career with Washington, where he was picked in the third round in 2016, before being dealt to the Kansas City Chiefs in 2018 for quarterback Alex Smith. The veteran defensive back returns in 2020, having signed a four-year, $40 million contract in free agency.
Given the availability of cornerbacks Benjamin St-Juste and first-round NFL Draft pick Emmanuel Forbes, many observers expected last season to be Fuller’s last in Washington. However, after a highly uneven season from St-Juste and a lacklustre debut from Forbes, Fuller’s standing could be higher than ever. He’s a little older, but not too old, and his established status as a locker room leader makes him an ideal coach on the field for the new regime, if he and they get along.
There are definitely other possibilities for the Commanders to consider this summer, but they will not find the mix of familiarity, expertise, and rooted leadership that Fuller provides anyplace else.
