Since Washington’s Kalen DeBoer was chosen as Nick Saban’s replacement on January 10, many Crimson Tide assistants have been replaced. Alabama will hire Baylor’s Chris Kapilovic as offensive line coach and Georgia Southern’s Bryan Ellis as tight ends coach, according to Ryan Fowler of Tide 100.9. However, these new additions have a bit more transaction history than previous Tide helpers. One of DeBoer’s first appointments at Alabama was Washington offensive line coach Scott Huff, who oversaw the Joe Moore Award-winning front five this past season.
DeBoer also invited Huskies offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb along on Jan. 14, but despite having the job, he pursued other opportunities and was eventually signed by the Seattle Seahawks for the same position on Feb. 9. Huff was expected to follow Grubb to Seattle for the offensive line coach post, and he made it official on February 11. Nick Sheridan was DeBoer’s tight ends coach at Washington from 2022 to 2023, but the new head coach later brought him to Alabama for the same position. However, he was promoted to offensive coordinator after Grubb left for Seattle, leaving the tight end position open once more.
Ellis has never coached tight ends, but as offensive coordinator at Georgia Southern last season, he helped lead the team to a top-30 passing offence and completion percentage. Furthermore, as co-offensive coordinator at Western Kentucky from 2019 to 2021, Ellis built a squad that scored more than 44 points per game in his final season there.
