The Washington Commanders have a lot to climb to become NFC East champions, and they may do so by reworking their offence and adding excellent playmakers.
While the team’s starting quarterback’s status remains uncertain, investing in a talented wide receiver can help the team compete with the Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys.
In addition, the squad is apparently linked to an AFC wide receiver whose future with the organization is uncertain.
Washington Commanders will step up their pursuit of Cincinnati Bengals WR Tee Higgins.
Tee Higgins is a skilled wide receiver who is about to hit free agency if the Cincinnati Bengals do not utilize the franchise tag on him. The Clemson product has the potential to become WR1 elsewhere, which the Washington Commanders can help him achieve.
Higgins demonstrated in 2023 that he can come up to the plate despite having to play second fiddle to Ja’Marr Chase for the past few years. While his season ended abruptly, he still managed to accumulate 656 receiving yards and 5 touchdowns in 12 games.
While a franchise tag can throw a wrench in Dan Quinn’s intentions to land his WR1, Nathaniel Marrero believes the Commanders can still make a strong case for him, but he does add one caveat:
The Commanders will have a chance to sign Higgins regardless of whether he gets franchise-tagged or enters free agency. Washington can pay him more than other clubs, and they have the draft resources to trade for him if he is tagged.
A Higgins and McLaurin combination may light up the NFL and set up whatever the Commanders’ quarterback is next season for success, but it’s a move better suited to a squad that’s ready to win right now.
If the Commanders can recruit a talented pass-catcher in free agency, Tee Higgins might be the missing piece in their quest to dethrone one of the NFC East’s two dominant teams.
