The Texas Rangers could sign a former Boston Red Sox player shortly.
J.D. Martinez, a former Red Sox All-Star, is still looking for his next home in free agency. He impressed with the Los Angeles Dodgers last season, but he is still waiting for his next opportunity after the team signed two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani.
Martinez has been linked to a number of clubs, but has yet to sign owing to a fairly delayed free agency season. According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the 36-year-old still has plenty of pop in his bat and could end up signing with the Texas Rangers.
“Before the (San Francisco Giants) signed Jorge Soler, they made an offer to J.D. Martinez,” Heyman told ESPN. “Word is that the ex-Dodger did not want to go there. The Rangers are a possible fit for Martinez.”
Martinez will be a valuable asset to any team that acquires him. He earned his sixth All-Star selection as a Dodger last season, finishing with 33 home runs, 27 doubles, and 103 RBIs in just 113 games.
It’s unknown whether the Rangers will eventually sign him, but they’d be a good fit for the slugger. Texas is seeking to build on a successful season that included a World Series championship.
Martinez definitely has the ability to help a club at a high level, and it would not be unexpected to see him sign soon, especially with Spring Training approaching.
