The Green Bay Packers appear to be set on offence. A few changes may be required, but the foundation has been created for an exceedingly successful future on that side of the ball. The defence has the components in place to be successful; nevertheless, some tweaks will be required to push them to the next level.
The squad will start the 2024 season with a new defensive coordinator, defensive line coach, and passing game coordinator. Now they could have an exceptional veteran in their secondary.
The Green Bay Packers may find a prominent leader for their defence.
Terrance Jordan of Fansided discussed how the Packers could add another leader to their secondary:
Jordan Love’s accomplishment has elevated the Green Bay Packers from “team on the rise” to “bonafide contender.” Love was poised to continue Green Bay’s history of unbroken outstanding quarterback play, particularly late in the season, and he did so with Jayden Reed, Romeo Doubs, Dontayvion Wicks, and Christian Watson–the league’s youngest receiver corps.
Many have theorized that the Packers could part ways with Aaron Jones this offseason, but I don’t see how. Jones has been injured, but he is not only one of the senior statesmen on the league’s youngest squad; he is also incredibly effective when he is on the field. Instead, seek for defensive turnovers.
The safety position is the first place to look. Jonathan Owens and Darnell Savage are free agents, and neither is guaranteed to return following underwhelming seasons. With Love demonstrating his readiness, the Packers may consider making a win-now move to capitalize.
Even after restructuring Derek Carr’s contract, the Saints will need to reduce salary significantly this offseason. Tyrann Mathieu is under contract for two more years, and with 33 career interceptions, he has been one of the league’s top ball-hawking playmakers over his 11-year career.
Pairing Mathieu and Jaire Alexander in the Packers defensive backfield would be a frightening sight for the rest of the NFC, giving the Packers a greater chance of competing with the 49ers, Lions, Eagles, and Cowboys–their key NFC opponents.
The Saints’ need to get their finances in order may result in some excellent offers for discriminating trade partners. Mathieu has been a difference-maker throughout his career, and for a fourth-round pick, Green Bay could immediately improve their defence.
Are the Packers Interested in Trading for Safety?
In previous seasons, it may have seemed unlikely. However, there have been other clues this season that suggest the Packers are prepared to make a move. General Manager Brian Gutekunst has stated that he is willing to consider using their many draft picks to bring in a veteran.
Additionally, new defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley emphasized the importance of the safety position in his defence. Bringing in a person like Mathieu might not only improve the defence right now, but also provide leadership for the position in the future.
The Packers currently have 11 draft picks for the 2024 draft, five of which are in the first three rounds. There’s plenty of ammunition to bring in a veteran.
