ESPN NEWS: Bills GM Makes Telling Statement on All-Pro edge rusher Future in Buffalo

Despite the fact that Von Miller had his poorest statistical season to date in 2023, it seems the Buffalo Bills are prepared to continue using the All-Pro edge rusher for another campaign.

Regarding Miller’s future, general manager Brandon Beane stated this week that the team is expecting a strong showing in 2024 after Miller took a while to properly recover from an ACL tear the year before. As the season progressed, Miller’s influence on the field grew, and Beane expressed his confidence that this improvement would continue into the upcoming campaign.

Bills Proceeding With Von Miller
The veteran edge rusher’s large cap hit and Beane’s high assessment of Miller for the upcoming season, as ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler pointed out, virtually guarantee that Miller will still be with the Bills in 2024.

Fowler said on X, “Bills General Manager Brandon Beane has a positive outlook on Von Miller and says he should be able to get back to his pre-injury self.” Miller’s agreement includes $32 million in dead money through 2024. Meaning: probably not going anywhere.
He battled to restore his explosiveness for months following the injury he sustained in a Thanksgiving Day victory. Miller was a member of the team’s defensive line rotation during the regular season, recording just three total tackles without any sacks.

Ultimately, late in the season, the Bills benched Miller for a crucial game, which meant he was a healthy scratch for the team’s Week 17 matchup with the New England Patriots. At the time, the Bills were still in the hunt for a postseason berth, and they wouldn’t secure it until the next week, when they defeated the Miami Dolphins in the season finale to win the division.

The following week, Miller was back in the starting lineup against the Dolphins, seeing 15 snaps. He continued to get better as the postseason approached. In the wild-card round victory against the Pittsburgh Steelers, he was able to apply pressure, and the next week against the Kansas City Chiefs, he recorded a career-high two tackles.

Bills Might Be Getting Another Shot
Miller will probably stay in Buffalo through at least the 2024 season due to his contract and large dead cap number, but if the Bills want to move on, an insider suggested they may be able to let Miller go this offseason.

The Dallas police issued an arrest warrant for the Bills edge rusher on November 30, following reports that he had beaten his pregnant girlfriend. According to Buffalo News reporter Jay Skurski, the Bills may be able to terminate Miller’s contract and move on without suffering a major financial loss if the league suspends him this offseason.

The Bills could void Miller’s contract’s remaining guarantees, including his $17.145 million base salary for 2024, if the NFL suspends him for breaking the personal conduct policy, Skurski wrote. If that happens before the start of the following season, the Bills would save a significant amount of salary cap space.

Miller has refuted the allegations.
