The Browns would obviously want to have him back for the upcoming season as a “break in case of emergency” quarterback, but it appears as though the NFL Comeback Player of the Year may have outperformed Cleveland for his release.

Flacco wants to see if he can find a team that provides him with the starting job or an opportunity to compete for it, according to Browns insider Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com.

This makes sense for the 39-year-old, no doubt. Since he parted ways with the Baltimore Ravens in 2019, his brand is at its peak. This offseason, a lot of teams are searching for their franchise quarterback. It’s conceivable that Flacco views himself as a backup quarterback to a rookie or as the starting quarterback for a team that is unable to get their preferred signal-caller.

But it is quite unlikely that a team will open the season with Flacco as their quarterback. It’s also true that if Flacco signed somewhere, he would most likely have a better opportunity to start the season.

The two parties are apparently interested in Flacco returning to Cleveland if the starting opportunity isn’t available. A strong, seasoned arm that understands the team’s needs is better than the Browns experimenting with a different backup, such as Mitchell Trubisky or Jacoby Brissett.

The Cleveland Browns aren’t viewed as a strong playoff danger for the upcoming season, despite their exceptional performance in the previous one. The Browns have the tenth-best AFC odds (+2000) to win the Super Bowl according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
