According to Peterborough United chairman and co-owner Darragh MacAnthony, 777 Partners must perform a major revamp at Everton if their purchase is successful.
Farhad Moshiri, the Toffees’ principal stakeholder, has agreed to sell his 94.1 percent position in the club to the Miami-based business. Moshiri has invested about £700 million since joining Everton in February 2016, although the club has lost almost £400 million in the last four years. Meanwhile, Everton have just narrowly avoided relegation from the Premier League in the last two seasons.
Standard Liege, Hertha Berlin, Genoa, Red Star, and Vasco da Gama are among the clubs owned by 777, which also has stakes in Sevilla and Melbourne Victory. However, some Everton fans are skeptical of their proposed purchase, with Liege and Hertha fans protesting against the investment firm. The Times also alleged that the British Basketball League, which is also controlled by 777, was on the verge of going bankrupt due to an £825,000 late payment.
Speaking on his podcast The Hard Truth, MacAnthony believes that 777 will need to ‘cleanse’ the entire club at Everton in order to turn around their fortunes.
“I don’t know them [777 Partners],” he remarked. I’ve read about their track record at other clubs, which has gotten a lot of attention from the press, which wants to put a negative slant on things. All I ever said was that Everton’s owner has put in, what, £700 million and has been hammered. If you want to torture yourself, spend a billion bucks, similar to what Todd Boehly is going through at Chelsea.
“I don’t know much about them – who knows?” Everton appear to be the club that hangs on for dear life, and how long can you cling on until your nails snap? They appear to be on a cliff, clawing their way back up.
“Perhaps that club needs an exorcism from top to bottom before it can rebuild.” I know I’m a Liverpool supporter, but you need your derbies and rivalries. I don’t want Everton to be relegated; I want those games to be meaningful. Perhaps they require that to occur. “I’ve said before about big clubs that you have to go backwards to go forwards.”It’s similar to an exorcism in that you must go through the entire process. We’ve been through something similar this summer, both on and off the field – you need a cleanse. You need a bit of a blessing, and perhaps Everton do as well. Someone else will step in and buy if they don’t turn out to be bad owners.
This notion that Everton will go bankrupt – teams like that never do, they’re always rescued.”
