The trade market for Justin Fields has been fairly quiet this offseason, and it does not appear that will change before the opening of free agency.
ESPN’s Dan Graziano reported on Sunday that the Bears had received some unexpected comments from other clubs when considering potential trades involving Fields. Some teams reportedly compared the former Ohio State star to quarterbacks who have spent the most of their careers as backups.
“Right now, the message the Bears are getting back from teams is that they don’t consider Fields more of a sure thing than other potential one-year options such as Sam Darnold or Drew Lock, who wouldn’t come with the fifth-year option decision that Fields’ eventual team will have to make by early May,” Graziano said in a statement.
Interested teams are undoubtedly attempting to persuade the Bears to drop their asking price for Fields. It is realistic to wonder whether Fields can be a true franchise quarterback, but most people believe his ceiling is much greater than that of Darnold or Lock.
At least four teams have been identified as possible suitors for Fields. These teams may want to wait and see how free agency plays out before deciding how much to offer for the young quarterback. To this point, Fields does not appear to be generating much interest.
The Bears own the first overall pick in the upcoming draft. They will most likely use it on Caleb Williams, but they might also remain with Fields and trade back.
