WHAT HAPPENED?
A new 70,000-seat stadium will be built. The Rosonneri has already submitted a preliminary urban development proposal for the “San Francesco” region to the San Donato Milanese town council as the first step before submitting a full project plan.
The San Siro has hosted Milan since 1926 but has not received any major renovations since the 1990 World Cup, despite repeated attempts by both Milan and Inter, who share the ground.
In fact, a municipal heritage commission designated the stadium as a site of “cultural interest” in August, rejecting all requests to demolish it, forcing the two Italian giants to proceed with their plans to find a new home.
THE OVERALL PICTURE:
Milan has big plans for their new stadium. They are interested in developing a new “club museum, an AC Milan store, the Rossoneri’s new headquarters, a hotel, and an entertainment district, as well as an Energy Centre for the production of sustainable power.”
The long-term goal is to considerably strengthen the city’s infrastructure hub by promoting “sustainable mobility and public transportation with improvement works on the existing infrastructure network, which would involve the railway station, metro station, and road network.”
WHAT THEY SAID:
AC Milan Chairman Paolo Scaroni stated, “For more than four years, we have embarked with conviction on a journey aimed at giving our club one of the best stadiums in the world, capable of accompanying us into a victorious and sustainable future.” This is a preliminary step in the evolution of this process, but it also demonstrates our ownership’s dedication to ensuring continual progress for AC Milan both on and off the field.
WHAT COMES NEXT?
For the time being, both Milan clubs will play at the San Siro Stadium. However, like AC Milan, Inter are considering relocating to a new stadium, with a site near Assago now being considered.
