A experienced pitcher who made 18 starts for the Tigers in 2021 has won a seat on his sixth MLB squad.
According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, right-hander Jose Urena has been named to the World Series champion Texas Rangers’ Opening Day roster.
Urena and top prospect Wyatt Langford will need to be added to the 40-man roster before the opening against the Cubs.
Urena, 32, was named to the Tigers’ starting rotation for the 2021 season. He appeared in 26 games and finished 4-8 with a 5.81 ERA.
He has also thrown for the Rockies, White Sox, and Brewers in recent years, although he is best remembered for his time with the Marlins in the start of his career. From 2017 to 2018, he made 59 starts and pitched 343 2/3 innings with a 3.90 ERA.
Ureña had a solid spring with the Rangers, pitching 16 innings with a 2.25 ERA. He is projected to be a back-end rotation option or long reliever.
The Rangers’ current rotation comprises Nathan Eovaldi, Jon Gray, Dane Dunning, Andrew Heaney, and Cody Bradford.
Ex-Tiger Michael Lorenzen inked a one-year contract last week, while ex-Tiger Max Scherzer is recovering from back surgery.
