Perhaps edge rusher Danielle Hunter got a hometown bargain after all.
According to ESPN’s Stephen Holder, the Indianapolis Colts offered Hunter more money to play for a different AFC South team before the veteran agreed to a two-year, $48 million contract with the Houston Texans.
Hunter is a Houston native who attended high school in nearby Katy, Texas. In his first press conference, he discussed how growing up near the Texans influenced his NFL career. He idolized previous No. 1 overall pick Mario Williams and later went to the Texans’ 2023 playoff game versus the Cleveland Browns.
So, while the Colts may have had a more lucrative offer, Hunter appeared to be more excited to play in Houston with DeMeco Ryans as his head coach than to play for another AFC South team.
Throughout the offseason, there has been speculation that the Texans have emerged as a free agent destination. However, this is the first actual evidence of that being true.
Hunter should create an explosive defensive line with NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Will Anderson in 2024, providing Ryans with some firepower as they defend the AFC South crown. He’ll also have the opportunity to come home for the first time since being picked in the third round by the Minnesota Vikings in 2025. Hunter also played for Baylor University in Waco, Texas.
