Last season, the Atlanta Falcons’ pass rush ranked 21st in sacks (42), and 16th in pressures (143).
Unlike their defensive tackles, their defensive ends are inexperienced and have had little playing time in their careers. Head coach Raheem Morris emphasized the current state of their defensive line and what they require.
“I know we don’t have Aaron Donald, but when you get guys like a Grady and a David inside, and the juice that they bring, and you add some young presences around them, or some potential older veterans, who knows, man,” Morris went on to say.
“You can get a very special D-Line.” I’m looking forward to adding folks to it.”
Morris suggests that they need another starter defensive lineman, specifically a defensive end.
The Falcons are looking to bring back a veteran defensive end.
The Atlanta Falcons have indicated interest in reuniting with a Pro Bowl defensive end.
Morris informed reporters that he spoke with Calais Campbell about returning to the Falcons next season.
“I look forward to getting a chance to sit in front of him because he’s certainly as impressive as it gets when it comes to football character,” Morris said, as reported by D. Orlando Ledbetter in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “He’s had one of the most outstanding careers possible. I’m looking forward to discussing it in greater detail with him at a later point.”
Campbell is 37 years old and entering his 17th season in the league. In his career, he has 865 tackles, 175 TFLs, 254 hits, 105.5 sacks, and 17 forced fumbles, as well as six Pro Bowl selections and a first-team All-Pro.
He spent the last season with Atlanta.
Calais Campbell played last season with the Atlanta Falcons.
The Falcons signed Campbell to a one-year contract worth $7 million.
Campbell appeared in 17 games, starting 17, and recorded 56 tackles, ten TFLs, 17 hits, one safety, 6.5 sacks, one forced fumble, and an 80.0 PFF grade.
He concluded the season tied for the team lead in sacks, second in TFLs, and first in hits.
The Atlanta Falcons currently have two inexperienced defensive ends on their roster.
The Falcons have two unproven defensive ends under contract: Zach Harrison and Demone Harris.
Harrison was selected in the third round last season and finished with 33 tackles, four TFLs, five hits, and three sacks in 16 games.
Harris will enter his eighth season in the NFL, having previously played for five different clubs. He has 11 tackles, two TFLs, three hits, and no sacks in 14 career games.
The Atlanta Falcons have limited cap room.
The Falcons now have around $6 million in cap space, according to Over The Cap. To re-sign him, they must either clear up cap space or offer him a team-friendly contract.
