SURPRISED PICK: Lack Of Defensive Selections Has Force Browns to Change Second Round Plans

The game of football has evolved dramatically throughout time, to the point where defence has given way to a powerful offence. That focus was clear on Thursday night.

The Indianapolis Colts selected their first defensive player at pick 15 in the first round. Following the selection of Laiatu Latu, just eight additional defensive players were chosen in the second half of the first round.

Given the calibre of this wide receiver class, as well as the strong interest in quarterbacks and offensive tackles, it’s not surprising that offence received the most attention. Despite the predicted interest in offensive prowess, 23 players were selected from that side of the field. To be specific, offensive picks account for more than 71% of all selections.

In my second mock draft, I predicted that the Browns will trade up for running back Trey Benson in round two. Based on what we’ve seen so far, this would be ambitious, but it may also be more realistic. Benson, wide receivers Troy Franklin, Ladd McConkey, and Malachi Corley, as well as offensive tackles Kiran Amegadjie, Kingsley Suamataia, and Patrick Paul, might be selected in the second round.

In the third round, the team might obviously take another offensive talent, but I am mentally prepared for defensive help with the 85th pick.

Unless they trade their first pick, the Browns are expected to make their first selection about 8:40 p.m. EST.
