JUST IN: Portsmouth boss’ John Mousinho verdict key red card decision as his side’s charge continues and Wigan Athletic fume

The Blues won 2-1 at the DW Stadium to maintain their unblemished start to the season and extend their unbeaten run to 21 league games.

The home crowd and Wigan bench were furious at the behaviour of referee Will Finnie, who sent out striker Charlie Wyke three minutes after the game began.
Shaun Maloney’s staff were outraged by what happened and accused the Pompey bench of having the striker sent off, with assistant manager Graham Barrow and Blues coach Jon Harley both booked.

Pack was unable to continue, and Mousinho believed the ref made the correct call.

‘It appeared at the moment that he jumped in and wounded Marlon, which is the most disappointing thing for us,’ he said.

‘I haven’t seen it since, but my initial assumption was that those challenges could result in red cards since they damage players.
‘Marlon isn’t going to come off unless he’s hurt, so I thought it was an unnecessary challenge at that point in the game, and the referee handled it properly.’

The red card occurred after a first half in which Pompey rallied from behind to take the lead at halftime – and eventually go on to win three points.

Regan Poole and Paddy Lane scored again to cancel out Martial Godo’s opener, and Mousinho was satisfied with his team’s performance.

‘We don’t want to make a pattern of going a goal behind, but it can happen,’ he remarked.

‘I thought we were fine,’ she says.Wigan started well, as one would expect from a good team in a completely misleading league position.

‘I honestly think it’s even more fake in some ways because when you start with minus eight points, it’s very tough to make those up.

‘They have a lot of attacking talent on their team.

‘So the biggest compliment I can offer the lads is that despite being 1-0 down, they didn’t panic.

‘I was confident that we would succeed.’

‘I felt fairly confident that we would stick to the game plan and produce opportunities, which we did.’Coming from behind in that manner demonstrates tenacity and a smart response to adversity.

‘Scoring from a set piece is one of the most satisfying things.

‘It’s not only about being brilliant from set-pieces; it’s about producing them, and when you have sustained pressure and sustained attacks, we want a little bit more.

‘In the second half, a handful of deliveries were dangerous, and a couple of them hit the front man. We need to improve in this area.

I’m delighted for Regan to score again, as well as Paddy, who is developing into a real goal threat while also contributing to the overall performance.’
