The Jontay Porter betting scandal may result in some big sports betting changes in the near future.
According to ESPN’s David Purdum, the NBA and its betting partners are apparently considering limiting which players are available to sports bettors in prop bets, as well as perhaps removing “unders” off the betting menu.
Porter was banned by the NBA last month after an investigation revealed that the former Toronto Raptors centre disclosed confidential medical information to a known sportsbettor, limited his own performance to influence the outcome of at least one bet, and bet on basketball games while a member of the Raptors organization.
The investigation began in response to a rush of unusual sports betting activity on bets predicting Porter’s failure to hit specific statistical benchmarks. On March 20, the league discovered that a sportsbettor with whom Porter was linked wagered $80,000 that Porter would underperform his predicted numbers. Porter eventually left the game.
Porter had a two-way contract with Toronto worth $415,000 this season.
According to ESPN, the NBA is considering limiting the availability of two-way players in prop bets. As a result of this shift, sportsbooks would no longer offer bets on athletes like Porter.
According to ESPN, the NBA has given material from its probe with federal prospectors.
Porter appeared in 26 games for Toronto this season, including five starts in place of the injured Jakob Poeltl.
