Denard Robinson, a popular former Michigan quarterback, has left the team after being arrested on April 15 for reportedly operating while drunk in Ann Arbour. “He is no longer on staff,” Michigan football spokesperson Dave Ablauf confirmed Tuesday. “I can’t comment further because it’s a personnel matter.” Robinson, 33, was detained after being involved in a single-vehicle incident near East Eisenhower Parkway and South State around 3:05 a.m.

Charges are still pending toxicology results, however the Ann Arbour Police Department has yet to release a police report. “The case has been submitted to the city attorney’s office,” Ann Arbor’s strategic communications manager, Chris Page, told The Detroit News via text. “It is currently under review.” In February 2022, former Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh hired Robinson as assistant director of player personnel.

Sherrone Moore, the new head coach, retained him. His was the second OWI arrest and dismissal for a Michigan football staff member in just over a month. Greg Scruggs, who Moore had hired to coach the defensive line, was arrested for alleged OWI in the early hours of March 16 with a blood alcohol level double the legal limit. He resigned on March 21. Robinson, nicknamed “Shoelace” because he played football with his laces untied, played for the Wolverines from 2009 to 2012. He holds the NCAA record for career rushing yards by a quarterback with 4,495 yards and single-season rushing yards with 1,702 in 2010, the same year he was named the Big Ten’s Offensive Player of the Year.

The Jacksonville Jaguars selected the All-American in the fifth round of the 2013 NFL Draft. Robinson worked in Jacksonville’s front office for two years before returning to Michigan to join Harbaugh’s staff. In 2020, he worked as an offensive quality control coach before transitioning to personnel as a college scouting assistant the following year. In 2016, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office cited Robinson, then a Jaguars running back, for careless driving this week following a July 3 collision in which he drove into a retention pond and was discovered asleep at the wheel. M.T. Borgert, the officer who issued the citation, was also the one who decided Robinson was not impaired the morning of the crash. A sheriff’s office crash report indicates that no citations were issued that morning.
