Angel Hernandez, a longtime major league umpire, is retiring, according to several reports. The retirement would take effect on Tuesday — tomorrow — so if this is right, Hernandez has officiated his final major league game as an umpire.
Hernandez, 62, has been a major league umpire since 1991. During that time, he earned a bad reputation among both players and supporters owing to a mix of poor work performance and unnecessary conflict. Former Ranger Ian Kinsler was penalized during his catrexasreer with the Detroit Tigers for claiming that Hernandez was a lousy umpire who needed to find another job.
Earlier this year, Hernandez called out Ranger outfielder Wyatt Langford on three consecutive pitches that were way outside the strike zone. The incident went viral and sparked significant criticism, including from many journalists.
Hernandez filed a discrimination complaint against the league in 2017, claiming that he was passed over for assignments due to racial discrimination. In 2021, summary judgment was issued in favour of MLB.
