Phillies place OF Brandon Marsh on injured list with right hamstring strain
The Phillies made a number of roster changes Monday afternoon, including placing two players on the Injured List.
Brandon Marsh, who was removed from Sunday night’s loss to the St. Louis Cardinals after hurting his hamstring while rounding the bases, and Kody Clemens, who was omitted from that night’s game due to low back spasms, were both placed on the 10-day injured list. Clemens’ placement was retroactive to May 31.
In corresponding moves, utility player Weston Wilson was recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley, and the team also selected the contract of Triple-A outfielder David Dahl, who has spent parts of six seasons in the majors, most notably with the Colorado Rockies for three years, including an All-Star appearance in 2019.
To create room for Dahl on the 40-man roster, the organization placed Triple-A right-hander Michael Rucker on the 60-day injured list.
While stints on the Injured List are never ideal, one right now could perhaps be less detrimental than the average term on the shelf.
The Phillies play the Milwaukee Brewers on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday before taking two days off to travel to London for a two-game series against the New York Mets on June 8 and 9. They get another day off after that before beginning a six-game interleague series against the Boston Red Sox on June 11 at Fenway Park.
It is unknown whether Marsh will return to the active roster after serving the 10-day minimum, although he could do it while missing only seven games. Clemens may return for the series opening in Boston and miss just five more games.
With Whit Merrifield and Cristian Pache struggling in their cameos in left field for much of the season, Phillies manager Rob Thomson will be hoping that the left-handed-hitting Dahl can provide some power to his lineup against right-handed pitchers. Dahl has thrived in Lehigh Valley, hitting.340/.416/.660 with 12 home runs in 43 games for the IronPigs.
Meanwhile, Wilson can play a variety of positions on the field. He made his major-league debut with the Phillies in 2023 after a lengthy journey through the lower leagues, smashing a home run in his first major-league plate appearance on the same night that then-Phillies starter Michael Lorenzen pitched a no-hitter. Wilson struggled at Lehigh Valley to begin the season, but has homered in each of the last three games.
Thomson will need output from more than just Dahl and Wilson now that Marsh and star shortstop Trea Turner have left the club. Players like Edmundo Sosa must stay hot, and struggling hitters like Bryson Stott and Nick Castellanos must break out of their slumps.
The Phillies have not endured a lot of difficulty in 2024. Now it has arrived.
