DEAL AGREED: Saint Have Reportedly Hijack Chiefs Bid to Sign $30 Million NFL Top WR Free Agent

Russell Gauge, a free agency wide receiver, had a terrible season in 2023. Following a devastating concussion in the 2022 Wild Card Round, Gauge entered the offseason determined to prove himself to the Buccaneers in the aftermath of Brady’s departure. Unfortunately, the wide receiver tore his patellar tendon, terminating his season before it could even begin. This effectively ended his stint in Tampa Bay, as the Buccaneers’ cash-strapped organization released him and used the savings to re-sign Mike Evans, Baker Mayfield, and Antoine Winfield.

Russell Gauge has attracted little public attention in the free agent market as a result of his recent ailments. While he is not a future Hall of Famer, he may still be an effective second or third option in a passing game. During his last healthy season, the wideout had a solid 51 receptions for 426 yards and five touchdowns while playing behind Evans and Chris Godwin. The wide receiver’s greatest season came in 2020, when he caught 72 passes for 786 yards and four scores. Perhaps those days are behind him, but he still possesses the ability to compete for a position on a team.

Looking around the league, the Kansas City Chiefs and New Orleans Saints appear to be the best fit for free agent Russell Gauge. On paper, Kansas City has three trustworthy receivers: Marquise Brown, Xavier Worthy, and Rashee Rice. However, Rice will face a ban following his offseason of criminal activity, and Kansas City lacks a reliable backup for his role in the offence. Rice and Gauge are both possession receivers, and while Rice is more experienced at this point in their careers, Gauge can play the job well. If Michael Thomas is too pricey, don’t be surprised if Kansas City switches to Gauge.

Speaking of Thomas, his former team could use a free agent like Russell Gauge. New Orleans has one of the league’s weakest offensive lines, so Derek Carr will need to get the ball out early to make it through a whole 17-game season. Chris Olave can do a little of everything, and Rashid Shaheed is great at stretching the field, but this club needs someone who can dump off at the line of scrimmage. Gauge is built for this position, and the Saints’ cash-strapped squad should be interested in a cheap deal.
