With struggling veteran first baseman Anthony Rizzo, the New York Yankees may be on the verge of disaster.
Rizzo was not in the lineup for Sunday’s series finale against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Notably, Yankees manager Aaron Boone told reporters prior to the game that he was also considering sitting Rizzo for Monday’s game against the Kansas City Royals.
“I might give him [Monday off] too,” Boone said of Rizzo, according to The Athletic’s Chris Kirschner. “We will see. We’ll get through [Sunday], and he and I will get together to devise a strategy.
“There’s no question over the last two, three weeks especially, it’s been a little bit of a struggle [for him],” Boone stated. “Making minor adjustments may not always result in immediate results.” It is sometimes a process.”
While a one-game absence could be interpreted as a maintenance day off, a multiple-game absence would be more indicative of Rizzo’s genuine benching status. It might also be the right decision at this point for the 34-year-old former All-Star. Rizzo has had a horrible season, batting.224 with a.623 OPS in 64 games. That includes a dismal 1-for-29 record in June thus far.
Rizzo struggled mightily for the Yankees last year, but it was primarily due to a serious concussion that he was dealing with at the time. He appears to be in good health this time, but he still cannot identify the mark on the plate. That might lead to DJ LeMahieu taking over as the Yankees’ main first baseman, with Oswaldo Cabrera also stepping into a more regular role from here.
