SAINT LATEST NEWS: Saint Head Coach Dennis Allen Has A Concerning Injury Update on Chase Young Amidst His Neck Surgery

Chase Young received an encouraging update on his recuperation after neck surgery. According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Saints defensive end “received a positive report” during a check-up with “renowned neck specialist” Dr. Robert Watkins.
The idea is for Young to undergo additional tests in roughly six weeks, bringing us to the end of July/beginning of August. According to Fowler, Young plans to attend Saints training camp in California, which begins on July 24.

New Orleans Saints see a 'highly motivated' player in Chase Young
Young’s neck difficulties began in the preseason of last year, when the former second-round pick experienced a stinger that forced him to miss the regular season opening. Young did not miss another game for the rest of the 2023 season, though the lingering ailment apparently hampered his trade market. The imminent free agent was subsequently transferred from the Commanders to the 49ers for a third-round pick, and Young appeared in 12 games (including the postseason) for his new team. The player underwent surgery following the season.

The Saints eventually signed the edge rusher in free agency, giving him a one-year deal worth up to $13 million if he stays healthy. Of course, this is easier said than done. After winning Defensive Rookie of the Year, Young had a knee injury that sidelined him for the 2021 and 2022 seasons. He responded impressively in 2023, finishing with 7.5 sacks, but it doesn’t sound like the veteran has fully recovered from his injury issues.

While the Saints certainly believed in Young’s potential, the purchase will undoubtedly put the team’s depth to the test. Cameron Jordan, a Saints stalwart, had surgery earlier this year to address a serious ankle condition, but the veteran was able to participate in some of this week’s sessions. Carl Granderson, a former UDFA, is on the team’s radar after a breakout season. Payton Turner, the 2021 first-round pick, and Isaiah Foskey, the 2023 second-round pick, are also vying for depth places.
