It began with an anonymous player vote, continued with a scathing remark from a beat reporter, and culminated with Carlos Correa going on an all-time streak to prove everyone wrong.
Correa finished third in a poll conducted by The Athletic last week, in which players from across the league were asked who they thought were the most overrated players in the game. Around the same time, LaVelle E. Neal pointed to Correa’s lack of offence as evidence that he isn’t living up to his $200 million contract.
Since those two events, Correa has been on a tear for the Twins.
Over the weekend, he joined franchise legends Kirby Puckett, Tony Olivia, and Joe Mauer as the ninth player in team history to record 22 or more hits in ten games. He’s had 17 hits in the last seven days, with 9 RBI and three home runs, two of which came in the same game on Sunday.
As if Correa’s victory over his naysayers wasn’t enough, MLB recognizing him Player of the Week was the perfect icing on top.

Correa was chastised last season for his offensive struggles, including being booed at Target Field. Rather of making a big deal out of it, Correa defended fans who were upset with him and utilized it, as he put it, to fuel his Ferrari.
That was a pleasant moment with the supporters to express his desire to improve his game. This requires a completely new level of drive to prove them wrong. Fans may be furious, but the outside noise appears to have awakened a sleeping offensive monster within Correa, which is the best thing that could have occurred.
The Twins were obviously getting a good deal when they signed Correa for $200 million over the next six seasons, but having this version of him unlocked feels even better. It is not just what Correa is accomplishing, but the enthusiasm that is currently coursing throughout the clubhouse, that is most important. Royce Lewis is on fire, Jose Miranda is dominating pitchers, and the Twins’ once-dormant offence is resurgent.
That all comes back to Correa, and Twins fans should send the biggest fruit basket conceivable to everyone who woke him up.
