Auburn, which is lacking in defensive backfield depth, has acquired former Alabama and Colorado transfer Jahquez Robinson to help shore up the situation. As a graduate transfer, Robinson brings two years of eligibility with him to Auburn. He is a scholarship recipient.
Charles Kelly, the new Auburn defensive backs coach, previously coached Robinson.
In the Class of 2020, Robinson signed with Alabama and was listed as the No. 285 player, No. 21 cornerback, and No. 49 Florida player. During the recruiting process, Robinson travelled from Sandalwood (Fla.) to Oklahoma and South Carolina.
Robinson did not play in 2020 and redshirted in 2021 while attending Alabama for the 2020-22 seasons. Over the next two years, he appeared in seven games and recorded two tackles, one tackle for loss, and a sack versus Vanderbilt. Robinson played seven games for Colorado in 2023, starting two of them. He had nine tackles and one interception with the Buffaloes. Robinson was described as 6-foot-2 and 205 pounds.
Robinson received a 61.7 grade from PFF after playing 123 defensive snaps. Robinson suffered a hamstring injury that hampered his action in the 2023 season.
Robinson first joined the transfer portal in January, before to spring workouts, but did not find a new team until now, when he has signed with the Tigers. He has experience at safety, nickel, and cornerback, positions where Auburn had skill but lacked depth, particularly after Colton Hood left for Colorado via the spring transfer portal.
Auburn exited the spring portal session with about 80 scholarships, leaving Hugh Freeze and his staff with plenty of room to elevate a chosen walk-on or, in this case, add a late addition in Robinson.
Overall, Robinson is the 15th addition to Auburn’s transfer portal this cycle, which combines the winter and spring gateway openings. Before spring practice, Auburn acquired former Texas safety Jerrin Thompson and former Alabama cornerback Antonio Kite to its secondary.
