Brian Cashman has done an outstanding job of building championship squads for the New York Yankees since 1998, but all good things must come to an end at some point.
Cashman is under contract until 2026, but there are already rumours regarding his prospective replacement. Cashman recently addressed his opinions on where his mind is at regarding the future of his front office career, according to SNY’s Andy Martino.
“The way I’ve always looked at it, I’m not sure what will happen in a few years or ten years. “I could be let go during the deal,” Cashman said.

The four-time World Series champion is unlikely to be let go early. That is not only due to his hardware, but also to the heavy lifting he undertook in the winter of 2023-24 and last spring to construct the Yankees juggernaut, which now has the third-best record (52-29) in baseball thus far. The Yankees are dominating in 2024, but they are still thought to need one or two more supplementary agreements to erase doubt about their chances of winning their first World Series title since 2009.
Afterward, Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner will need a backup plan in case Cashman, 56, decides to retire or take on a reduced role in the front office. Thus, SNY’s Andy Martino identified the two individuals who may have the best chance of inheriting Cashman’s position when the time comes, saying:
“But if he steps down after the 26th season or begins a transition process sooner, Vice President of Player Development Kevin Reese is widely regarded as the current frontrunner to succeed Cashman. “I heard this from no less than five well-placed sources,” Martino stated.
“‘He is the hot name,’ one of the sources said.”
The Yankees have two home-bred alternatives to replace Cashman when the time comes.
Reese, a Yankee during his playing career from 2005-06 and post-playing career, has worked to develop some of the Yankees’ top talent since being recruited in his present position in 2017. This includes RF Aaron Judge’s ascension to AL MVP in 2022, RHP Luis Gil’s breakout in 2024, and closer Clay Holmes’ rise to become a top reliever in the majors. Not to mention, a star-studded farming system has been developed throughout his leadership, highlighted by CF Jasson Dominguez’s outstanding performance in the majors and minors.
Reese is well-versed in the Yankees’ system and could succeed Cashman, as could Yankees assistant general manager Michael Fishman, who has assisted the New York native in making timely trades and lucrative offseason signings through valuable quantitative analysis, keeping the team competitive in multiple roles since 2005.
According to Martino, Cashman is fully committed to promoting Reese as his successor. It is too early to say, but murmurs suggest that the Yankees may keep the position in-house, albeit top-tier brass from around the league may become available over the next two years for Steinbrenner and the Yankees to consider alongside their own. It will be difficult to find another general manager that can go 26 years without a losing season or win three consecutive World Series in their first three years in the position, but the Yankees’ name brand, roster, and due diligence will most certainly produce the finest candidate when needed.
