SAD NEWS: Phillies Suffer a Huge Injury Blow, Lose Key Crucial Starter With Shoulder Strain

Spencer Turnbull’s return to Comerica Park ended after three innings pitched for the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday afternoon. Turnbull, 31, left his start against the Detroit Tigers with a strained right shoulder. Turnbull was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Thursday after suffering a right shoulder issue. Rob Thomson talked with Tim Kelly of Phillies Nation about how long the right-hander will be out.

“It’ll probably be six or eight weeks. With his injury history, we’re going to be cautious with him and make sure we do this correctly.”

With Taijuan Walker out with a finger injury, the Phillies will have to rely on their depth to complete the rotation. Yunior Marte is returning from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to take the slot on the active roster.

Turnbull’s shoulder problem began on his next-to-last pitch of the game, before he got Matt Vierling on an infield popup to close the third inning.

“I just felt a little grab in the back of my tricep, shoulder area,” Turnbull informed me. “After that curveball, it became a little tight for me. Hopefully, it’s nothing major, but I wanted to let them know how I felt. I didn’t want to make things worse.
