The New Orleans Saints issued a statement Wednesday in response to reports that the team is behind on payments to the Superdome Commission for the Caesars Superdome’s continuing renovations.
Greg Bensel, team spokesman, issued the following statement:
“The New Orleans Saints have been and will continue to be excellent partners with the LSED and the state of Louisiana.” We are proud of our over $200 million contribution to renovating the Caesars Superdome, making it one of the world’s best and most famous stadiums. In good faith, team representatives have communicated and met with LSED personnel on a regular basis about the stadium project and related issues. We have no objections to making the present payment of $11.5 million or the remaining debt.
“We have, however, requested some documents over a long length of time and have yet to obtain them. Prior to our last payment in December, we sought the paperwork, but we continued to fund in good faith. We’ve been waiting for and seeking that documentation since then, and we’re expecting it before today’s LSED meeting. Yet another timeline has slipped with no reason or contact whatsoever.
“We contacted the LSED on several occasions, but no contacts were received until Tuesday afternoon. When sufficient proof is submitted, a payment will be instantly authorized. Unfortunately, we were disappointed to hear statements from the LSED meeting today indicating the team is not acting in good faith, when we believe the reverse is true.
“We are hopeful that this matter can be resolved expeditiously as any delay would be very unfortunate for all parties (and for the city).”
