Sometimes NBA players bet on themselves, and it doesn’t pay off.
Either because they fail to realize their full potential or because there isn’t a large demand for their services.
Notably, this could be the case for Caleb Martin.
According to Heat insider Barry Jackson, the veteran forward is having difficulty finding work on the free market.
Apparently, he denied a contract extension from the Heat earlier in the offseason because he wanted to make roughly $15 million year.
The Heat can no longer make him the same deal, and Martin has yet to find someone else in the league who can match what he was offered in Miami.
Martin is a reliable rotational player with a high three-point percentage.
He can also play defence and scored well last season.
However, the Heat have a reputation for creating players who are ideal for their system, but they tend to fall off as soon as they leave South Beach, so other clubs may be leery of recruiting more former Heat players.
Martin would still be welcomed by Erik Spoelstra and company because he was a great contributor to them.
Unfortunately for him, it appears that he might have dropped the bag, and he’ll have to settle for a smaller deal regardless of where he ends up playing next season.
