Bryce Harper, the Philadelphia Phillies’ first baseman, returned to the lineup briefly before missing Wednesday night’s game against the Los Angeles Dodgers due to a damaged left hand.
Harper, who had been out for nine games with a strained left hamstring, suffered the injury during Tuesday’s 10-1 win over the Dodgers. According to Phillies manager Rob Thomson, Harper hurt his hand while fielding a groundball in the first inning.
During the game, Harper appeared to be in pain following a second-inning play with Miguel Rojas’ grounder.
In Harper’s absence, All-Star third baseman Alec Bohm moved to first base, while Edmundo Sosa began at third base for the Phillies’ 4-3 victory over the Dodgers.
“His condition is improving.” “The swelling has gone down,” Thomson said after the game. “We will assess his status again tomorrow.”
Harper has been a valuable contributor to the Phillies this season, batting.299 with 20 home runs and 58 RBIs. The squad had the best baseball record as of Wednesday.
Harper, a two-time NL MVP, received consecutive National League Player of the Month honours in May and June. He is near the top of various National League statistical categories, such as batting average, home runs, RBIs, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, and OPS.
Harper confirmed his participation in the All-Star Game on July 16 at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, during his remarks on Tuesday.
Thomson also provided an update on All-Star right-hander Zack Wheeler, who had an MRI for back tightness but revealed no structural damage. Despite some lingering pain, Wheeler pitched five innings and earned a win against the Dodgers on Tuesday, throwing 76 pitches in tough weather conditions in Philadelphia.
