The majority of NBA deals have been completed for some time, with the next major milestone in the NBA world being the start of training camp right before preseason begins. However, the Houston Rockets could be open to moves.
The Rockets are currently in an unusual situation in terms of team composition. They have Jalen Green and Alperen Sengun, two young players with serious star potential. A year ago, the club also made moves to acquire Dillon Brooks and Fred VanVleet, accelerating the process of developing a playoff-ready group.
The franchise can now pursue a variety of options. Winning trades will be critical for the Rockets, whether they are investing in youth or trading away high-potential players to bring in more win-now players.
The Rockets may rely on youth by trading Brooks to the Los Angeles Lakers and combining him with LeBron James, which would be ironic given the two players’ history. In this scenario, the Rockets forward would be able to employ his excellent defence and outstanding floor-spacing ability to help Los Angeles compete at the highest level, while Houston would bolster their youthful core with complementary players.
The Rockets may acquire players such as Rui Hachimura, Gabe Vincent, and numerous draft picks to help Houston develop a long-term strategy for eventually building a contending squad, while also freeing up rotation space for young players with high potential to play.
This would be a brave move by Houston. They would have to choose between winning now and focusing on development at the sacrifice of current competitiveness. Brooks’ defence contributes to the team’s identity in the near term, but he is capable of playing a vital role in a competitive Los Angeles side.
