The Cleveland Browns received bad news this weekend when they placed veteran offensive lineman Brian Allen on injured reserve with a calf issue. Cleveland signed UFL offensive lineman Zack Johnson to replace Allen on the team’s 90-man roster.
The Browns were looking forward to having the experienced lineman on the squad because he can play both guard and centre. Cleveland’s offensive lines suffered injuries at the tackle position last season, so it was evident they sought depth this offseason.
When asked about Allen’s availability for the 2024 season, Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski did not sound optimistic about his return.
“We’ll see how the roster shakes out,” Stefanski told reporters, according to ESPN’s Daniel Oyefusi.
On Sunday, the Browns made the difficult decision of releasing Allen from the reserve/injured list. In addition, the Browns released safety Dyshawn Gales and signed Faion Hicks.
Allen, 28, signed a one-year agreement with the Browns this summer after being discarded by the Los Angeles Rams earlier this year.
Allen appeared in five games as a reserve offensive lineman for the Rams last season after starting as Los Angeles’ centre in the 2021 Super Bowl. The veteran offensive tackle has started 32 of 50 career games with the Rams.
With the former Rams centre released, Cleveland must feel comfortable with Luke Wypler and Zak Zinter as backups to starters Ethan Pocic and Joel Bitonio.
