The Spurs intend to employ Knicks player development coach Scott King as the new head coach of their NBA G League franchise in Austin, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN on Twitter.
According to Steve Popper of Newsday (Twitter link), King has been mentioned in league circles as a prospective NBA head coach.
King, who was technically the assistant director of player development for New York this season, played Division I basketball in college at Stony Brook and Fairfield until graduation in 2016. He started with the Pacers’ old G League affiliate, the Mad Ants, and was then hired by the Pistons as a video intern for the 2018-19 season, according to Eduardo Villalpando of VAVEL.com.
King has been with the Knicks since 2019, first as assistant video coordinator before getting promoted. According to Stefan Bondy of The New York Post (Twitter link), he was in charge of reviewing questionable plays and deciding whether or not to dispute them.
According to Brian Lewis of The New York Post, Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau held King in high respect, which verifies Wojnarowski’s allegation.
Will Voigt departed the Austin Spurs to join BYU as an assistant under Kevin Young, so the team was looking for a new head coach.
