The Detroit Lions have completed the final cuts to their 53-man roster ahead of the 2024 regular season. Last season, the Lions were one win away from reaching the Super Bowl after losing to the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship game. Detroit released several well-known players this week, including its veteran quarterback.

The Lions have released veteran quarterback Nate Sudfeld, who spent the most of the preseason as Jared Goff’s backup. Instead, the organization stated that Hendon Hooker will serve as the backup quarterback this season.

Sudfeld had the most reps this spring and pleased the coaches with his abilities. He did not play in the last preseason game, which many assumed was due to Detroit’s desire to keep him healthy and his certainty of making the 53-man roster. However, in an unexpected change of events, the team opted to release him.

The seasoned quarterback has been in the league since 2017, beginning his career with the Philadelphia Eagles before moving to Detroit. Sudfeld’s total career passing yards are 188, with one touchdown and one interception. While he has yet to get his stride in the NFL, he will most likely be a backup option for the remainder of his career.
