The San Diego Padres are growing stronger behind the plate.
Baseball journalist Rafael Petit reported on Monday that the San Diego Padres have signed catcher Elias Diaz. Diaz, a right-handed hitter, will receive a minor league contract, according to Daniel Alvarez-Montes of EI Extrabase.
Diaz, 33, was an All-Star last season for the Colorado Rockies. He hit.267 with a.725 OPS and was voted All-Star Game MVP after hitting the game-winning home run for the National League in the eighth inning. Diaz’s hitting average has up to.270 this season, but his power figures have decreased slightly.
The Rockies (48-83) decided to release Diaz earlier this month in favour of promoting 22-year-old catcher prospect Drew Romo. Diaz, however, still has some pop in his bat and could eventually be an upgrade for San Diego over.
Kyle Higashioka and Luis Campusano, both 230 hitters, play catcher. The Padres are now in second place in the National League wild card standings, 75-58, and are still adding players following a blockbuster trade deadline.
