The fact that John Metchie III plays in the NFL is extremely astounding. The former Alabama standout, chosen by the Houston Texans in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft, survived not just a ruptured ACL in his final game at Alabama, but also cancer.
Metchie was unquestionably a first-round prospect when he left Alabama. He had shown himself on the football field, but an injury forced him to slide to pick 44. Then he was forced to miss his rookie year as he battled (and subsequently defeated) cancer.
He is currently entering his third (but really second) NFL season on a squad that is loaded at the position. His condition has apparently piqued the curiosity of other teams across the league, including the Atlanta Falcons.

When you look at the Texans’ wide receiver depth chart, you can see why John Metchie III won’t get the opportunity he deserves. This offseason, they added Stefon Diggs to a position that already has two stars: Nico Collins and Tank Dell. Noah Brown, Xavier Hutchinson, Ben Skowronek, Robert Woods, and Steven Sims provide depth for the team. That is an unfair environment for the up-and-coming squad.
Metchie finds himself in an unfair position, and Houston would be wise to move him to a team that can benefit from his speed, such as the Falcons.
When the Dirty Birds traded for Rondale Moore from the Arizona Cardinals, they believed they had found their speed guy. However, it ended before the preseason even began when he suffered a season-ending injury, and his replacement met the same fate.
Metchie would be an excellent addition to the Zac Robinson and Kirk Cousins-led offence.
While they have the need, they may not have the resources. They’ve already traded/lost two draft picks for the 2025 draft. Their third-round pick was traded to the New England Patriots for Matthew Judon, while their fifth-round pick was taken as part of the tampering punishment. Would Terry Fontenot be willing to trade another pick?
Having few draft picks may not affect you immediately, but it will ultimately catch up with you. You must find a replacement for that player, which normally occurs during free agency, when things become more expensive.
Nonetheless, John Metchie would be an excellent addition, and a cheap one at that. He still has two years left with cap hits considerably below $3 million. If Fontenot is prepared to give up another draft selection, this would be another wise decision on his behalf.
