San Diego Padres third baseman Manny Machado shocked the baseball world during an emotional press conference where he tearfully revealed his desire to quit the team. After years of loyalty and standout performances, the six-time All-Star admitted that mounting frustrations, lack of appreciation, and internal tensions have led him to contemplate an exit from the franchise.
“I’ve given my heart and soul to this team,” Machado said, visibly fighting back tears. “I love my teammates, I love this city, but I deserve some respect too.”
Machado, who signed a massive 10-year, $300 million contract with the Padres in 2019, has been a cornerstone of the team’s resurgence. He has consistently delivered both on offense and defense, making him one of the most reliable and recognized players in Major League Baseball. Despite his efforts, however, the 2023 season has been a disappointing one for the Padres, missing the playoffs and underperforming expectations. This, according to Machado, is just part of the reason behind his growing discontent.
“I’ve sacrificed a lot, and sometimes it feels like it’s not enough. You go out there every day and give it your all, and when that effort isn’t reciprocated or acknowledged, it takes a toll,” Machado explained.
Rumors of internal locker-room issues and lack of communication between Machado and the front office have surfaced over the last few weeks. The star also hinted at feeling underappreciated by management, sparking speculation about strained relationships within the organization.
When asked directly about his future with the Padres, Machado was noncommittal but indicated that unless things change drastically, his departure seems likely.
“I’ve got a lot of thinking to do, and I just want what’s best for my career and my family,” he concluded.
As Machado contemplates his future, the Padres may now face the daunting reality of losing their franchise player, one whose talent and passion have defined the team for years.
