Liel Abada has shared an emotional statement on Instagram as the crisis between Israel and Palestine escalates.
Football Scotland exclusively disclosed last night that the Israeli winger, 22, met with club management at Parkhead on Monday after supporters displayed Palestinian flags during Saturday’s match against Kilmarnock. The Celtic management is said to have offered Abada support when he was targeted for abuse on social media in his home country.
Celtic published a statement last night criticizing the Green Brigade flags, which have regularly supported the Palestinian cause over the years. The ultras, who were held in the stadium’s North Curve, displayed a big sign that read: “Free Palestine. “Congratulations to the Resistance!”
It happened just hours after Hamas launched a horrific strike on Israel, killing hundreds of innocent civilians, to which Israel responded by bombing over 200 Gaza Strip targets. It is estimated that approximately 1,500 people have died on both sides.
Former Hoops player Nir Bitton slammed the Green Brigade’s demonstration of solidarity with Palestine, calling the fan organization “brainwashed.” After “one of the darkest days” in Israel’s history, a saddened Abada has issued a statement on his Instagram page.
“It is difficult to explain the range of emotions,” the winger wrote. I believe we have awoken to one of the worst days in my country’s history.
“I’d like to thank everyone who has sent me encouraging messages on social media in the last few days.” It is not taken lightly. My heart goes out to the families who have lost loved ones. I’m hoping for more tranquil days. “I adore you all.”
Abada is presently out till the New Year after injuring his thigh on international duty last month. He recently signed a new four-year contract with the Scottish champions.
