The Detroit Lions beat the Los Angeles Rams 26-20 in overtime on Sunday night, defeating their iconic ex-franchise quarterback Matthew Stafford for the second time this year. The Lions faced an injury scare late in the game, with both teams level at 20. Key offseason acquisition Carlton Davis III dove for a pass that Stafford soared over his receiver’s head, almost resulting in a vital interception. Davis III stayed on the Ford Field field while trainers examined him after the try. Following the game, Davis provided an update to Lions reporter Colton Pouncy.

“Saw Carlton Davis III in the locker room,” Pouncy said on his X account. “He told me he just had his wind knocked out. There is no need to panic. The Lions’ new-look secondary had its moments, including a Kerby Joseph interception of Stafford in the end zone, but allowed the Rams to pass for nearly 300 yards despite standout wide receiver Puka Nacua being out due to injury.

Davis III recorded 10 tackles in the night. The Lions were outgained 387 yards to 363 yards in the end, but they grabbed control in overtime, running the ball down the Rams’ necks and scoring the game-winning score. Detroit’s next game is a road test against Kyler Murray and the Arizona Cardinals, which will provide Davis III and the rest of Detroit’s defensive backfield another chance to demonstrate their abilities against a talented and dynamic NFC quarterback.
