Five games into the season, the Buffalo Bills’ passing offence ranks 25th in the NFL. While much of the lack of output may be ascribed to the departure of All-Pro wide receiver Stefon Diggs, most of it stems from Buffalo’s lack of a genuine No. 1 receiver for quarterback Josh Allen, who still does not have a solid relationship with any of his pass catchers.
According to many sources, the Bills are looking to upgrade at receiver, with Las Vegas Raiders wideout Davante Adams being linked to the team. A much more feasible alternative is Cleveland Browns WR Amari Cooper, whom CBS Sports’ Cody Benjamin recently suggested the Bills trade for.
“Maybe the Browns would eat some of Cooper’s remaining contract to appease the seemingly disinterested pass catcher,” Benjamin suggested. “Josh Allen would surely sign off if it meant getting a bona-fide No. 1 out wide.”
Buffalo’s top receiver, Khalil Shakir, has 18 grabs on 19 targets for 230 yards and two touchdowns, but the team’s second- and third-leading receivers are tight end Dalton Kincaid and running back James Cook. Curtis Samuel, Keon Coleman, and Mack Hollins have all contributed, but no receiver has recorded a 100-yard game this season, and only two have beyond 60 yards.
Adding a weapon of Cooper’s calibre would immediately boost Buffalo’s passing offence with much-needed explosiveness. Last season, the five-time Pro Bowler gained 1,250 yards while averaging 17.4 yards per reception. He was second in the league in receptions of 40 or more yards (eight) and tenth in receptions of 20 or more yards (21).
