The Boston Bruins brought in Joonas Korpisalo to act as insurance while Jeremy Swayman was in a contract disagreement with the team.
However, the Bruins were aware that Korpisalo was not exactly a stud. Last season, he had a 3.27 GAA and.890 save percentage. These are not the figures for a primary goaltender. However, he started in the Bruins’ season opener and allowed six goals on 35 shots.
Despite his bad performance, he received a positive co-sign from his head coach, who stated that he was not the problem. Instead, Jim Montgomery referred to the defence, which was really underwhelming.
‘Korpisalo was not an issue tonight,’ Montgomery said. ‘It was the crowd in front of him. You cannot give up four backdoor tap-ins and expect your keeper to make save after save. He saved a lot of breakaways. “He was good tonight.”
According to Bruins Insider, Korpisalo is something of a project for Bob Essensa. The team wants to give Korpisalo some time, and maybe from there they can do some excellent work with him. However, if Korpisalo’s performance does not improve, the publication suggests trading him and finding a different backup.
Whatever the situation, the Bruns are pleased to have Swayman back. At the end of the day, your primary goaltender determines who wins Cups. However, if the Bruins want to pick up some victories in the middle of the season, Korpisalo may not be enough.
