The Detroit Lions sustained a serious setback in Week 6 when defensive end Aidan Hutchinson shattered his left tibia and fibula. There is speculation that he may return to play in the Super Bowl if the Lions make it, on the early end of a 4-6 month recuperation period.
“Surgery went great, which is all good news,” Lions head coach Dan Campbell told the reporters the day following Hutchinson’s injury. “I kind of addressed this yesterday, but man, Hutch is a captain for us, a very productive player, a fantastic teammate, does everything right, and was having one hell of a game and season. So, look, it hurts. It sucks to lose someone like him. Not only is he a player, but he is also a locker room leader.”
It is considered fortunate that Hutchinson had his injury while playing in Arlington, which is adjacent to a Level 1 trauma centre (Baylor University Medical Centre) with a doctor who is a national authority in his type of damage. A smooth and successful surgery was the clear first step toward a speedy recovery.
Social media images from Sunday’s game against the Minnesota Vikings showed Hutchinson watching the game with his family. As expected, a major medical device of some kind is seen on his lower left leg.
Following the team’s 31-29 victory, Hutchinson shared a video on his brand’s Facebook page, updating followers on his early recuperation progress. He seems to be in good spirits.
“What’s up, everyone? “We are one week out from surgery,” Hutchinson stated. “The first few days were difficult, but we are now on the path to recovery and are attacking each day. And I’d want to thank all of the youngsters who made the videos. I’d like to thank all of my teammates, fans, and social media followers for their support. It has been great. And I’m doing well, just pushing through. I got to watch the Lions triumph today. It’s a huge win. So thrilled for them, and we’re going to keep pushing and taking this thing day by day.”
