The Denver Broncos may be able to make a purchase during the 2024 NFL Trade Deadline, and could the Carolina Panthers be one of the teams they consider? Diontae Johnson and Adam Thielen, two of the Panthers’ finest offensive players, will miss the team’s Week 8 game against the Denver Broncos.
There were rumblings that the Broncos were interested in Thielen before he signed with the Panthers last year, but those rumours did not turn out to be true. Johnson was acquired in a trade from the Pittsburgh Steelers this past summer. With both players ruled out for Week 8, you have to question how much of it is related to them likely being traded at the NFL Trade Deadline?
The deadline follows Week 9 games, and it’s clear that the Broncos need help on offence. They have significant long-term needs at WR and TE, but receiving urgent, short-term assistance may be an option. With the Carolina Panthers set to start 1-7 in 2024, veteran players such as Johnson and Thielen could be on the move.
Could the Denver Broncos get a player from the Carolina Panthers?
And if that’s the case, the Denver Broncos should come knocking, particularly for Diontae Johnson. Johnson is 28 years old and has 30 receptions for 357 yards and three touchdowns this season.
During his first five years with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Johnson caught 391 passes for 4,363 yards and 285 touchdowns, surpassing the 1,000-yard mark in 2021.
He averages 85 receptions, 955 yards, and six touchdowns during a 17-game season, indicating that he has been a quality player for several years. He won’t turn 29 until July 2025, so the Broncos may be able to keep him around for a few more years.
Adam Thielen is 34 years old, but he had a 100-reception, 1,000-yard season in 2023 with the Panthers. Adam Thielen has had some inconsistent quarterback play since departing the Vikings in 2022, so I wouldn’t write him out completely just yet.
Whatever way you look at it, the Denver Broncos need some offensive help. Bo Nix cannot continue to pass to this set of offensive players because it will do nothing to advance his NFL career. General Manager George Paton should contact Panthers GM Dan Morgan to see how much draft capital he would have to give up to get Diontae Johnson or Adam Thielen.
