The Tennessee Titans are sending quarterback Malik Willis to the Green Bay Packers, according to several reports.
ESPN and NFL Network report that the Packers will trade a seventh-round pick to Tennessee. Willis is expected to play behind starter Jordan Love in Green Bay, with second-year pro Sean Clifford.
It’s unclear how the depth chart breaks down, or which backup quarterbacks the Packers will keep on their 53-man roster to begin the regular season. The preseason roster also includes seventh-round rookie Michael Pratt (Tulane).
The Titans selected Willis in the third round of the 2022 draft as a backup to Ryan Tannehill and potential future quarterback. He played in eight games as a rookie, including three starts when Tannehill was injured.
The Titans then drafted Will Levis in 2023 and made him their starting halfway in place of an injured Tannehill. The Titans did not re-sign Tannehill at the end of his contract, and he is now a free agent as the regular season approaches. Levis is now the starter in Tennessee, and the Titans signed Mason Rudolph this offseason, making Willis expendable.
Willis, an athletic quarterback with the ability to make game-changing plays with his legs, could not consistently demonstrate a complete quarterback arsenal during his limited time with the Titans. In 11 games, including three starts, he completed 53% of his passes for 5.3 yards per attempt, 0 touchdowns, and three interceptions. He rushed for 144 yards and one touchdown, averaging 4.5 yards per carry.
He now has a second chance to earn a backup spot behind Love, one of the league’s most promising young quarterbacks.
