Earlier this week, the Green Bay Packers made an unexpected decision to add Marshawn Lloyd to their 53-man roster. Prior to their thrilling victory over the Chicago Bears, the Packers had opened up Lloyd’s practice window after he had been out since Week Two due to an ankle ailment.
The roster change was unexpected, since the rookie running back had emergency surgery to remove his appendix over the weekend.
While there was nothing that could have prohibited Lloyd from having his appendix removed, Green Bay was in a difficult position because they had already started his 21-day practice window. They simply couldn’t place him back on injured reserve without ruining his season.
So they devised a novel solution.
Instead of placing their rookie running back on season-ending injured reserve, the Packers added him to the 53-man roster, as originally stated.
Green Bay was able to place Lloyd on the non-football injury list because appendicitis is not a football-related condition.
While he will miss the next few games as a result of his recovery from surgery, he will also be able to return to the squad and be added to the roster before the season finishes.
Lloyd was officially on the practice squad as he recovered from his ankle injury, thus the Packers suddenly had a vacant spot. So they reintroduced a familiar face.
The Green Bay Packers re-signed quarterback-turned-wide receiver Alex McGough.
The Green Bay Packers have placed Marshawn Lloyd on the non-football injury list.
With Lloyd now in the NFL, the Packers chose to re-sign former quarterback and wide receiver Alex McGough.
McGough was originally signed by the Packers in the summer of 2023, prior to training camp. The former UFL MVP was dropped when the roster was reduced to 53 players, but he was promptly re-signed and placed on the practice squad.
His performance on the practice squad garnered some headlines late last season. Because he is also a skilled pass catcher, he frequently ran routes against the Packers’ starting defence during practice. His collision with outstanding cornerback Jaire Alexander caused an injury that kept the two-time Pro Bowler out for a spell.
This offseason, the Packers asked McGough whether he would be willing to swap positions from quarterback to wide receiver. Of course he agreed.
However, an injury sustained during team workouts hampered his ability to play, therefore he was released with an injury settlement.
He has returned to Green Bay, at least temporarily.
