Looking ahead, Bleacher Report’s Matt Holder has a suggestion for the Lions. In Bleacher Report’s November 18 story on targeting every club’s major deficiencies ahead of Week 12, he suggests adding a specific guy from the San Francisco 49ers, who has appeared in two Super Bowls, to help beef up the Lions’ roster.
Lions Should Snag the 49ers’ ‘High-Level Starter’
In the article, Holder suggests that the Detroit Lions should take advantage of the opportunity to sign cornerback Charvarius Ward from the San Francisco 49ers during 2025 free agency. He also rates cornerback as the Lions’ most pressing need right now, followed by edge-rusher, offensive line depth, wide receiver depth, and left guard.
“The Lions made several moves at cornerback this offseason, trading for Carlton Davis and using early draft picks on Terrion Arnold and Ennis Rakestraw Jr.” However, secondary play has been one of Detroit’s minor vulnerabilities in 2024,” he stated. “Add in the fact that Davis will be a free agent in the spring, and the Lions absolutely should consider its cornerback options on the open market.”
Holder continued, “Signing San Francisco 49ers cornerback Charvarius Ward would be a win for any team with Super Bowl hopes. He’s a high-level starter on the perimeter with extensive postseason experience, having played in Super Bowls for both the 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs.
Holder also advises selecting Ohio State’s EDGE JT Tuimoloau in the 2025 NFL Draft, claiming that he “would be a terrific draft target for Detroit.” He has the talents to improve the pass rush while also fitting in with the Lions’ aggressive run defence.”
The Detroit Lions are looking good!
Aside from making suggestions for improving the Lions’ roster, Holder praises the team.
“Are the Detroit Lions the top team in the NFL right now? “They just might be,” he wrote in the article. “There’s still room for improvement on defence, but when the offence is playing as it did during Sunday’s 52-6 romp over the Jacksonville Jaguars, it doesn’t matter.”
With that in mind, Holder thinks that the Lions do not need to make any changes at this time.
“Could the Lions scout the free-agent market and other practice squads for seasoned depth heading into the postseason? Sure, but there’s little need for Detroit to take any meaningful action right now,” he added.
“The Lions keep finding ways to win, even when they aren’t playing flawlessly, and they addressed their biggest need at the trade deadline,” he claimed. “While recent addition Za’Darius Smith won’t outright replace Aidan Hutchinson (broken leg), he’s better than any player the Lions may find available in mid-November.”
According to him, “with $62.1 million in projected 2025 cap space, the Lions have the financial flexibility to continue building a powerhouse in the offseason.”
