The Chicago Bears are clearly in a tailspin after a 4-2 start to the 2024 NFL season, where they’ve lost three straight games, including a 19-3 setback to the two-win New England Patriots, raising questions about head coach Matt Eberflus’ future in Chicago.
Naturally, calls for Eberflus’ firing have grown stronger as the Bears’ losing streak has lengthened, and the Soldier Field crowd made their view clear when they chanted “Fire Flus” during the fourth quarter of Sunday’s defeat.
There are questions about whether Eberflus has lost the locker room, and based on the team’s performance (and lacklustre effort), it’s hard not to believe so, especially given how players have questioned coaching decisions over the last three weeks.
Captain and Veteran Safety Kevin Byard was asked if Eberflus had lost the locker room, and his brief remark was pretty informative.
“I’m not gonna go there,” Byard told reporters after the game. “At the end of the day, we need to play better. “We have to win.”
So far, two head coaches have been fired in the 2024 NFL season: Robert Saleh (New York Jets) and Dennis Allen (New Orleans Saints). Could Eberflus be the third?
Matt Eberflus’ work status
Eberflus remains the Bears’ head coach as of Week 10 of the 2024 NFL season. There has been much conjecture about his future in Chicago, with many calling for him to be fired following an ugly 19-3 loss to the Patriots. Eberflus is in his third season as Bears head coach, and he has a 14-28 record, including 3-18 on the road and 0-3 after a bye week. His.333 winning % is the third lowest in team history, trailing only Abe Gibron (.274) and John Fox (.292).
What are the chances Matt Eberflus is dismissed during the season?
The Bears have never fired a head coach in the middle of the season, and that trend is unlikely to change unless something catastrophic happens. Chicago lost 14 consecutive games under Eberflus from 2022 to 2023, but that wasn’t enough for the club to fire him last season until the team improved in the second part of the season. While Eberflus is unlikely to be fired during the season, his job status after 2024 is in doubt, particularly given the growth of rookie quarterback Caleb Williams.
If Matt Eberflus is fired in the middle of the season, who will replace him?
If the Bears fire Eberflus during the season, two assistant coaches might take over. The first is defensive coordinator Eric Washington, who might be his successor as head coach and/or defensive play caller. Washington was an assistant head coach with the Buffalo Bills and had previously worked as a defensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers (2018-19). The second is offensive passing game coordinator Thomas Brown, who worked as an assistant head coach for the Los Angeles Rams from 2021-22. If Chicago wanted Washington to focus solely on defence, Brown would most likely fill the interim head coach position.
