There’s been a lot of rumours concerning the Red Sox and Juan Soto, including feverish tales about phone talks between Soto and Rafael Devers, deal numbers exceeding $600 million, and one Twitter user claiming he personally ruined Thanksgiving for the Red Sox PR team. However, the Sox are not the only team after Soto. The New York Yankees, one of their opponents, have reportedly increased their offer for the 26-year-old potential Hall of Famer. (Jon Heyman, New York Post.)
With all of the rumours, it’s important to remember that the Red Sox were considered long shots for Soto at the start of the offseason, and some still believe they are. According to one former general manager, they are significantly more likely to sign Teoscar Hernandez or Anthony Santander. (Jim Bowden, the Athletic)
When will the madness stop? According to some, Soto will sign before the Winter Meetings, which start on December 9. (MLB.com)
Do you know who is less fascinating than Juan Soto? Nick Pivetta was the first free agent to get an offer from the Red Sox this summer. Now that he has turned down the Sox’ qualifying offer, some believe he may reunite with Chaim Bloom, who now works for the Saint Louis Cardinals. (Andy McCullough, The Athletic).
Whatever happens with Soto, it’s been entertaining — and a throwback to the days when the Sox were frequently involved in the bidding for big free agents like Johnny Damon, Daisuke Matsuzaka, and David Price. But if you’re more interested in trades than free agency, here are some potential deals to consider. (Maccerullo, Boston Herald)
